According to UNE data, Spain's storage deployment hit 495 MWh in 2023 with cumulative capacity reaching 1.823 MWh by December's end. Residential installations led the growth, despite declining electricity prices affecting bankability and distributed solar businesses.

  • Installation Milestone: Spain achieved a significant milestone with 495 MWh of storage deployment in 2023.
  • Cumulative Capacity: The country's cumulative energy storage capacity reached 1.823 MWh by the end of December 2023.
  • Leading Sector: Residential installations were responsible for over three-quarters of these deployments.
  • Economic Challenges: Lower electricity prices have impacted the bankability and expansion of distributed solar energy, but Jos Donos emphasized the importance of strategic measures like VAT exemption or tax deductions for behind-the-meter storage projects.
  • Solar Expansion: Spain continued to grow its photovoltaic capacity with 5.59 GW of new solar power deployed last year and a cumulative installed PV capacity reaching 25.54 GW by December's end.
